Since 2012, NSW implemented new legislation regarding Work Health and Safety which has been updated a few times since.

As part of these changes, employers and premises controllers (such as building owners and property managers) are now required to consider installing RCDs (Residual Current Devices), commonly known as Safety Switches, on circuits supplying power points with up to 20 amps.

RCDs must undergo regular inspection and testing by licensed electricians utilising specialised equipment. This equipment measures the response time of the RCD in unsafe situations, known as the "RCD Trip Time Test," and can also assess the sensitivity of the device through an "RCD Ramp Current Test."
