Since 2012, NSW implemented new legislation regarding Work Health and Safety which has been updated a few times since.

As part of these changes, employers and premises controllers (such as building owners and property managers) are now required to consider installing RCDs (Residual Current Devices), commonly known as Safety Switches, on circuits supplying power points with up to 20 amps.

RCDs must undergo regular inspection and testing by licensed electricians utilising specialised equipment. This equipment measures the response time of the RCD in unsafe situations, known as the "RCD Trip Time Test," and can also assess the sensitivity of the device through an "RCD Ramp Current Test."

Comprehensive RCD Testing To Current Australian Standards

Horsell Electrical offers comprehensive RCD inspection and testing services, providing electronic databases and reports that comply with WHS regulations. Our licensed electricians across Newcastle are equipped with specialised testing equipment to ensure compliance with relevant standards, including AS/NZS 3000 for building installations, AS/NZS 3012 for construction sites, AS/NZS 3003 for patient treatment areas, and AS/NZS 3760 for portable RCDs.

In addition to inspection and testing, our electrical contractors can assist with RCD installation, switchboard upgrades, safety audits, and all other industrial electrical installation and safety requirements.

FAQs

What is an RCD, and how does it work?

An RCD (Residual Current Device) detects electrical faults by monitoring the flow of current in the electrical circuit. If an imbalance occurs, such as when current flows through a person’s body, the RCD cuts off the power to prevent electrical shock or injury

Why is RCD testing important for businesses?

RCD testing is essential to comply with workplace safety regulations and to ensure your employees and equipment are protected from potential electrical hazards. Regular testing reduces the risk of electrical accidents and minimises liability for your business

Can I test RCDs myself?

While it's possible to test RCDs using a test button on the device, it’s highly recommended to have a qualified electrician perform the test. Electricians can test the trip times and perform other checks to ensure the RCD functions as designed

How do I know if my RCD is faulty?

If your RCD fails to trip when the test button is pressed, or if it trips unexpectedly or frequently, it may be faulty and should be replaced. Regular RCD testing by a licensed electrician helps detect any issues early, preventing potential electrical risks

What happens if my RCD fails a test?

If an RCD fails a test, it is essential to replace it immediately. A faulty RCD can leave your home or business exposed to electrical risks, including shocks and fires. Horsell Electrical can help replace or upgrade faulty RCDs to ensure your property remains safe

Can RCDs be installed in older homes?

Yes, RCDs can be installed in older homes as part of an electrical safety upgrade. If your home doesn't have RCD protection, it's important to get them installed to meet modern safety standards. Our licensed electricians can assess your home and provide suitable installation options

Do I need to test RCDs in rented properties?

Yes, landlords are responsible for ensuring that the electrical systems, including RCDs, are safe and compliant with regulations. RCD testing should be part of regular electrical maintenance to ensure tenant safety and compliance with Australian electrical standards

How can I book RCD testing services?

You can call, email, or book online to schedule an RCD testing appointment. Our licensed electricians will test your RCDs, provide a comprehensive report, and recommend any necessary repairs or replacements
